This is an picture by my favorite illustrator Maria Sybilla Merian (1614-1717). I think that her images have inspired me more than any other artist. When she started painting there were very little, if any, female illustrators. Maria was the first to document the metamorphosis of moths and butterflies. At the time it was the general belief was that insects were born from the devil out of mud. She documented the insects life cycles and their habitats in her illustrations.
